Child Safe Organisation Act 2024 – UPDATE

Home / Child Safe Organisation Act 2024 – UPDATE

Last week the Queensland Government announced they will be fast-tracking the Reportable Conduct Scheme to better protect Queensland Children. The amendments to the previously ‘phased’ approach mean ALL Child Safe Organisations – including Churches – will be required to meet the new standards by 1 July 2026.

What is a Reportable Conduct Scheme?

Reportable Conduct Schemes are already in operation in many other states in Australia.  It will require Child Safe Organisations (churches) to report and investigate allegations or convictions of child abuse or child-related misconduct (reportable conduct) made about their workers and volunteers.   Some of the requirements will include

  • All workers or volunteers reporting concerns, allegations or convictions to the head of your church
  • An internal investigation be started as soon as is practical.
  • Notification to the Qld Family and Child Commission within 3 business days
  • Providing a interim (or final) investigation report within 30 business days.

What is Reportable Conduct?

  • A child sexual offence.
  • Sexual misconduct committed in relation to, or in the presence of a child.
  • Ill-treatment of a child.
  • Significant neglect of a child.
  • Physical violence committed in relation to, or in the presence of a child.
  • Behaviour that causes significant emotional or psychological harm to a child.

Support for Churches

While the final details of the Qld Reportable Conduct Scheme are still to be communicated, the team at QB will be working with the government and other religious bodies to develop policies, training and other resources for Churches that will help you implement the requirements of these new laws.  If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate contacting us.
